The “Bottoms Up Diaper Bank” has experienced great growth since its inception in November 2015. It was formed to fulfill a need for low income families with babies. Since WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and Bridge cards cannot be used to purchase diapers, purchasing diapers on a very tight budget is extremely difficult, diaper bank founder Elaine McElwaney said. With parents’ limited income going for rent, food, clothing, and utilities, many infants have to remain in one diaper all day. The lack of clean diapers is one of the leading causes of child abuse. Thirty-four seniors from Grosse Ile High School have been named Huron League Scholar Athletes for the spring season. To earn this distinction, a student must be a senior, must be awarded a Varsity letter in the sport they are competing in, and most importantly, must maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 of higher.

June 3 — Grosse Ile Music Boosters “Drive 4 UR School” during Islandfest; test drive a new Ford product provided by Gorno Ford and help support Grosse Ile Township Schools’ music program; following the Islandfest Parade look for the tent labeled “Drive 4 UR School” and sign up to test drive the demonstration cars between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. One driver per household can earn $20 for the school district’s music program with a promotion maximum of $6,000 in total for all participating drivers. June 4 — Islandfest Afternoon Tea fundraiser, 12:30 p.m., Ford Pagodahouse/Harry Bennett Boathouse, 20653 West River Road, Grosse Ile. Includes a mini-tour of the Upper Level of the Ford Motor Co.-built Pagodahouse. The menu will include guests’ favorites: Chicken Salad Tea Sandwiches, Cucumber & Dill Tea Sandwiches, Thinly-Sliced Ham on Basil Tomato Tea Bread, Savory Scones with your choice of Devonshire Cream or Lemon Curd, and a nice variety of mini-cheesecakes and tantalizing desserts. June 24-25 — Members of the Motor City Radio Club will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise at Centennial Farm; open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Setup starts at 2 p.m. The club will be setting up antennas, the radio equipment, and temporary shelter. Communications with other hams will run 24 hours from 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday. The club also is offering ham radio license exams at the Field Day site on Saturday morning. Anyone interested should bring a $15 exam fee, an original of your current FCC license (if you have one), a copy of your current FCC license (if you have one) and two pieces of identification (at least one photo).
